About two hundred thousand years ago, in a small corner of the "Granda ", the river Tanaro flowed along the Bra plain bordering the town of Sanfre. This is where rice is grown today.

For years, this area, similar to the rest of the Province of Cuneo had been used to cultivate wheat, corn and other grains. The idea of converting it to rice paddies came from Piero Donalisio. "I had this idea for a long time, it seemed like the right solution for the high humidity present in those tracts of land". These were his words in 1994 when the experiment to convert the land got under way. And now the rice has the perfect conditions to grow and thrive, thanks to the care and passion of Sebastiano Donalisio, who continues the work of his father.

'Granda Rice' was born in 2010 in an attempt to bring a noble product - Rice from the province of Granda - to your table.

Our paddy rice (made from raw crop threshing) is artisianally produced (in small batches, by hand), to provide you with the highest quality product.

The first phase of production is husking, or the removal of the outside covering the grain, is covering is also called "chaff". This is followed by bleaching, a simple mechanical process to remove the outer layers of the grain. It should be noted that the packaged product is not fully bleached. This is to keep its nutritional characteristics relatively intact. The result is a grain that is perhaps less bright or polished, but with a flavor which is both intense and gentle.

We would like to point out that the product does not undergo further processing such as polishing (treatment with oil and talc to make the grain brighter).

The rice grown at Azienda Agricola Donalisio Piero di Donalisio Sebastiano is the Loto (Lotus) variety. It is a short grain rice (the grains are small and slender). It cooks in 12 minutes and is suitable for risotto, salad, rice balls, cakes, pies and croquettes. The rice comes in 1 kilo, vacuum sealed packages.
